In most Indian Households you can find a place dedicated to worship known as pooja room or pooja ghar. The pooja ghar contains idols of deities and is considered to be the most positive space in your home. A pooja room is often commonly referred to as the center of the home, it is important for preserving spiritual balance and attracting good fortune. In addition to being a place of worship, this place offers peace, happiness, and protection by the gods. Important Things to keep in Pooja Room: 1. Altar - Use a simple metal altar, which would be ideal if it were crafted from gold or silver. Always make sure that the altar is only used for pooja and not any other purposes.


2. Directions of Idols & Pictures - According to Vastu, always make sure that the idols are facing either north or west and never set them directly on the ground keep them on a chowki and keep them at a level that is in line with your chest. Ensure that the chowki is made from teakwood or brass as they are considered auspicious. Goddess Lakshmi should be positioned with Lord Ganesh on her left side. Idols should not face each other.


3. Lamps or Candles - Never keep the pooja room dimly lit, always ensure that the pooja room has one or two candles or lamps lit. It is believed that the flame attracts blessings and gets rid of negative energies. During Pooja always make sure that the diya is placed on the right side of the person. Use glass-covered diyas for long durations.


4. Bell - It is common knowledge that a bell should be part of the essential things in your pooja room. However, According to Shilpa Shastras make sure the bell is made from Pancha dhatu, or the five metals - copper, silver, gold, zinc, and iron. The Pancha bhoota is represented by these five metals. 


5. Tulsi Plant - It is believed that having a Tulsi plant in the pooja room can protect you from evil energies and bring you peace. 


6. Shelves - Install a small shelf to keep the holy books like the Sacred Bhagavad Gita since it is considered auspicious. These books are a source of guidance and moral strength. 


7. Holy Ash (Vibhuti) - Vibhuti is known for its purifying energies, so it should be kept in the pooja room.


8. Flowers - The pooja room's calm aura is increased by keeping fresh flowers. They also make sure the room has a nice, clean scent.


9. Laxmi Charan Paduka - It is said that arranging the goddess Laxmi's lucky foot in the pooja room will bring wealth and success.


10. Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiv Idol: A statue of Lord Hanuman is particularly helpful for homes with children who need help in concentrating on their academics. Having a Lord Shiva idol can bring happiness, protect the house from bad energy, and offer direction and positivity in daily life.


Maintaining the Pooja Room:

1. Storage - Store items required for pooja like incense sticks, flowers, candles, and holy books in a neat manner. Avoid storing unnecessary items or trash. Never cover the idol's head with decorations or flower petals.


2. Colors - Be sure to use white, light blue, and pastel yellow color. Avoid black as it is considered inauspicious.


3. Avoid Impure Items - Do not keep items made from leather, or keep cash in the pooja room as they are considered impure.
