10 Avatar Of Lord Vishnu And Their Significance

In Hindu mythology Lord Vishnu is known as the protector. Whenever the world is threatened by an evil force Lord Vishnu takes the form of an avatar or incarnation and comes to earth in order to restore Dharma. Till now there are 9 avatars of Lord Vishnu and Kalki avatar is yet to come.


10 Avatars Of Lord Vishnu


The 10 avatars of Lord Vishnu are : Matsya (the fish), Kurma (the turtle), Varaha (the boar), Narasimha (half man, half lion), Vamana (the dwarf), Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha and finally Kalki. 


Matsya Avatar


According to vedic scriptures and puranas Lord Vishnu’s first avatar was Matsya or the fish. Matsya Avatar is depicted as a Giant golden fish. It is often described anthropomorphically, with the torso of Lord Vishnu connected to the rear half of a fish. Matsya Avatar saved the first man, Manu, from a giant flood. 


Kurma Avatar 


Kurma or the turtle was Lord Vishnu’s second avatar. When the Gods and the Asuras (Demons) were whisking mount Mandara to get Amrit or the elixir of immortality, they needed a powerful and heavy base to make the mountain steady. That’s why Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma and supported the mountain on his back.


Varaha Avatar 


Lord’s Vishnu’s third avatar was a form of a gigantic boar or Varaha. A demon named Hiranyaksha stole the earth and hid it in the primordial ocean. Lord Vishnu incarnated as Varaha to kill the demon and rescue earth. Varaha avatar is depicted as a colossal figure having a boar’s head and a human body, holding the earth with his tusks. 


Narasimha Avatar 


The fourth avatar of Lord Vishnu was Narasimha which literally translates into ‘man-lion’. Narasimha is described as a human body with a lion’s head. Lord Vishnu took the form of Narasimha to kill Hiranyakashipu, a demon who was partially immortal and was a threat to everyone. 


Vamana Avatar 


The fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu was Vamana. Vamana means dwarf in Sanskrit. Vamana avatar defeated Asura Bali and won the universe just with his three steps. 


Parashurama Avatar 


Parashurama was the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Parashurama means the axe wielding warrior. He was born as a brahmin but with the qualities of an Warrior, that is why he is often known as the warrior sage. Parashurama killed multiple demons in order to protect dharma. It is believed that he is an immortal. Parashurama will be the Guru of Lord Vishnu’s final avatar Kalki. 


Rama Avatar 


Lord Rama was the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. Rama means the warrior prince. Lord Vishnu incarnated as Rama to kill Ravana the demon king. Rama is described as ‘Maryada Purushottam’ or the most honorable man. 


Krishna Avatar 


The eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu was Krishna. Krishna means attractive. He is often depicted as a blue skinned man with his flute. Krishna killed the demon Kansa. He played a major role in the war of Mahabharata too. Lord Krishna’s childhood form is worshiped as Gopal. Lord Krishna’s teachings are written in the book Bhagavad Gita. Krishna popularized vedic teachings.


Buddha Avatar 


Gautam Budhha is the ninth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu took the form of Budhha to make the common people understand vedic knowledge of wisdom, not to be corrupted and guide them to the path of enlightenment. 


Kalki Avatar 


It is said that the tenth and the final avatar of Lord Vishnu will arrive at the end of Kaliyuga. Kalki avatar will arrive to kill all the evilness among mankind and restore Dharma once again. He will end Kaliyuga and Satyuga or the golden period will return.
